I’ve also noticed the car idles roughly and shifts from park to drive very hard. Driving into work this morning I got a flashing D drive on the instrument cluster, stopped and checked the owners manual and it says it could indicate a possible transmission problem. I checked the fluid and it looked okay and didn't smell burnt. The flashing D light means an intermitent failure in the transmission. When this happens the light will flash until the engine is shut off. If it was intermitent the flashing doesn't come back the failure was intermitent. However this shouldn't lock the gearshift out of the forward gears. That is probably a failure in the shift mechanism.
