Duramax ticking noise.
lly ticking. Pretty annoyed!! I developed a tick about 3 weeks ago and it was clearly coming from passenger side so i pulled valve cover and checked the valves. Found a few that were a couple thousandths out of specs so i went through and adjusted #'s 1,3,5,7. Bam engine is silent, running quieter and better than ever.

A failure of the hpfp sends tiny little metal bits into the fuel injectors damaging them. It has started making a clicking/ticking sound that can be heard in the cab pretty good and once window is rolled down, it is even louder. When at idle (in park or drive doesn't matter) there is a loud ticking noise coming from what sounds like drivers side rear of engine. It is only at idle as soon as throttle is given it goes away. At first I didn't think anything of it but it keeps getting louder and louder.
The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound like random typing on a mechanical typewriter. This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when in fact it was masked by other noises in the past.

The noise is not audible at idle or deceleration, only upon acceleration or when cursing down the highway. It seems to be loudest when the engine is hot 90+. Just Bought the truck and have previously owned a couple doge cummins. They were loud but they hummed along rhythmically not this random clacking and ticking.

It only seems to happen between 1,000 and 1500 rpm. My 16 LML made a similar noise sometimes, but this L5P seems to do it more. It's not the typewriter tick, that's for sure.
What you are describing is the common type writer tick. Very common after an oil change. Basically you get some air trapped in the lifter oil passage and it takes a bit of time for it to work out. When my LMM does it it takes 30 to 50 miles for it to clear up.
