I'm going to give it a full polish, as I did with my S&W 460V (3lb/12oz of chrome-like stainless beauty with a custom-made Kansas Black Walnut grip). The grip on the 686 is black plastic with a rubber covering, and frankly - it leaves a lot to be desired.

The 13 round magazine adds 5/8” of an inch to the grip (which gives me a full grip but barely making the cut) while the 15 round magazine adds a full 1 inch to the length with plenty of room for a full grip. That S/N would have shipped from the factory 1906-1909. It appears to have been refinished but not by S&W at some point.
