Pre 9.12 Ryze was a battlemage, with low range and mobility but high durability, making him a strong duelist and splitpusher. Current Ryze is a squishy burst mage who relies on a team frontlining for him. He's actually stronger for soloq now than he was before the 9.12 changes, but I don't enjoy his new playstyle nearly as much.

I personally think even triumphant ryze is corny, like one of the old warden skins. That said, zombie ryze competes hard with dark crystal. Zed: This one is hard if it's a good Zed, but you can time your ult with his to counter it. At the very least, break his kneecaps with W and E. Early armguard coupled with flashing his ult at the right time and proccing phase rush can allow you to avoid his damage.
As well as Ryze needs the mobility from phase rush in heavy CC teamcomps. Plus Ryze is a mid range mage and first strike relies on you hitting the enemy first, any other longer range champ makes the rune useless. The biggest issue is just, that there is two things is very important in proplay that Ryze is good at: Establishing lane-prio. Ryze have a very strong push why he can easily move around. In proplay the extra damage that some champs has can’t really compensate for the 2-3 seconds Ryze arrive to the fight. Even though i think as secondary trees the Domination tree with "Ravenous Hunter" and "Eyeball collection" and the Inspiration tree with "Perfect Timing" and "Cosmic Insight" are superior, I would also consider the Precision tree with "Presence of Mind" and "Cut down" which could solve two of Ryze' problems.
