Gravel would probably take longer than it took that guy to surround DT Westpoint with log walls. If you're planning lots of back and forth to set up a base, maybe just cut trees down as-needed and build floors with the wood in that area so they won't grow back in those spots. Even one-log trees will cover 3 spaces.

I decided to visit the military base, my first time. It took me, roughly, two game-time months to clear the trees and kill all zombies. You're more likely to find military gear on military zombies so pretty much only at *secret* military base, police and military armory.
