John Deere 8440 reverse not working. Yes, it's the four-wheel drive. Well, went and looked at it. In pretty rough shape. More going on with it than the guy initially let on. Very rarely will it go into reverse. Occasionally when going into forward gears there's a loud clunk when it starts to move. The rest of the tractor was in really bad shape.

You have a main hydraulic pump driven off the front crankshaft pulley. A common failure is the pump drive coupling causing the main pump not to turn. Check for that first between the pump and front crankshaft pulley. This is the main pump for your hydraulics and steering, etc. The clutch pump is a separate pump.
