The heli draws in zombies from a gigantic distance and the sound moves around a huge area. Even if you are not spotted, the moving sound will pull zombies around for the duration. They won't see you if you stay inside, but the helicopter still draws zombies.If you are outside during the helicopter event, the sound it produces will be pinpointed at you. So zombies will chase you specifically like it's personal for them. If you stay indoors whole the chopper is overhead - thd zombies will be pulled into your general area, but not to your specific location. The fact is, it's quite contentious. Some think that running is best, others think hiding is. Here is my opinion in a nutshell. Hiding is rolling the dice. If there is a large group next to your base and the heli is between you and it and there is a way into that building (from that direction) then the zombies will enter the building.

You can hide from the Helicopter event. I've done it a few times. You have to be inside the entire time the Helicopter is in the area and you cannot be seen at any point from the outside. Being in view from an open window could spell your doom. Making any noise can also alert the Helicopter to your presence.
