Katana is the most balanced, has decent range and solid damage. Duals are fast and short ranged, but don't hit hard. Odachi is slower, has the most range, and hits hardest.

Choosing Dual Swords puts a point in Skill. Choosing your starting weapons is just a fancy way of choosing where you want your first skill points to go.
