Epic commanders are not really a long term solution to anything in most cases. You want to do one thing, and do it really fucking well. I would set a long-ish term goal of Guan/Alex. Save ludicrous amounts of gems for them. Max YSG early. When alex comes, pair the two (possibly richard 5551 before, depending on how hard you grind gems).

With your commanders, focus infantry but cavalry is super important too to get around the map quickly but you need a solid cav commander first.If you are doing a rally and you want to have the best results, make sure that the special units will join first. For the open field my top 5 pairs would be Ed/Tomy, Alex/YSG, Saladin/Khan, Constantine/Charles and I guess Aeth/Richard although I do really want to say Aeth/Matilda.
nuke mina and cao cao if you're a spender. as long as your rally size is sufficient running nuke mina will make the fort go much much faster. if you're limited on commanders boudica lohar runs well. can also use the in game system for the new commander in expedition. Boudicca, bellsarius > lohar Cao Cao too.
